Designer Spotlight: Bottled Up Designs

About the Artist:
An avid glass and bottle collector, I have lived in the Pennsylvania Amish Country all of my life. As a collector, I have spent countless hours poking through the many old glass and bottle dumps scattered throughout the natural wooded habitats and rural farmlands where I live.
One thing that has always bothered me though, is how collectors take the valuable whole bottles and glass pieces, but leave the broken glass behind for the environment and the wildlife to deal with.

I have seen baby deer laying in the broken glass, foxes, squirrels and countless other wildlife running through it. Even birds landing in the glass while searching for a meal. To me, though broken, this glass still has beauty and history, so I decided to pick up the pieces and turn them into something beautiful again, in my remarkable line of recycled glass jewelry. Each piece of this eco friendly jewelry is truly "A Little Piece of History for you to Wear."
As a collector, I have prepared for each piece "The Story of the Glass" detailing what the glass was originally and the age of the piece.
A truly unique way to preserve the past while helping the future.

Designer Spotlight: CoolCorC

CoolCorC started in 2006 with a vision shared by two brothers, Josh and Larry. Their vision was to make quality, versatile products out of cork. What began with disposable cork cup sleeves has evolved into a diverse product line while remaining a family owned business focused on CoolCorC's mantra: create memorable, useful and quality products using the worlds most sustainable and versatile material: cork. All products are designed by a husband and wife team of Architects, Joshua and Jessica who are also CoolCorC's President and Vice President respectively.

Quick Cork Facts!
•  Cork is one of the most environmentally friendly materials in the world.
•  Cork is harvested simply by peeling off the outer layer of bark of the cork oak.
•  The bark grows back within nine years and the tree actually benefits from being farmed by giving it a longer life.
•  Cork trees that are harvested can live over 200 years.
•  Cork oak forests create a unique habitat that is home to many endangered species such as the Iberian lynx and the imperial eagle in Europe and the Golden Takin and Golden Monkey in the Quinling Mountains of Central Asia.
•  Cork's cellular structure is what gives it its unique properties as 60% of it is air trapped between fibers.
•  It is hypoallergenic, recyclable, biodegradable, insulating and waterproof.

Designer Spotlight: Sustainable Threads

Sustainable Threads was born from their collective professional experience and personal interest in rural development, entrepreneurship and social justice. Among the various options, they chose to leverage their relationships in the development sector and start a fair trade wholesale enterprise. They currently work with over 10 artisan groups in India, with the goal of long term, deep partnerships. Their focus is on the people, not just the product. This model requires a significant investment in design and product development, factoring in the skill sets of each community.

In addition to working with the fair trade practices in production, they devote considerable time and resources to weave in ecologically friendly packaging for their products and their company. This is always a work in progress, a struggle, that they are persuaded to engage in.

Most, if not all, of their packaging (cartons, peanuts, bubble wrap etc.) are recycled from various individuals and stores in their community, as well as from family and friends. They hope that next time you receive your package from Sustainable Threads; you’ll enjoy their products (of course), but also feel good about the recycled packaging!
